A24 was founded in 2012 by <strong>Daniel Katz<\/strong>, <strong>David Fenkel<\/strong>, and <strong>John Hodges<\/strong>. With that being said, welcome to TCN&#8217;s Studio Spotlight. Today we will be discussing the film production\/distribution company A24. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A24 doesn&#8217;t need big special effects or tons of CGI in order to make a good movie. It sounds simple, but all they need is a director with a good vision and cast that fits that vision. A big reason to why some of their movies are so good is simply because of the story being told. When it comes to the writers of these movies, they aren&#8217;t afraid to think outside of the box and get creative; <em>The Lighthouse<\/em> and<strong><em> Midsommar<\/em><\/strong> are great examples of that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those unaware of who A24 is, you might recognize them from some of these movies\/tv shows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>On the Rocks<\/strong> (Apple TV)<\/li><li><em>The Lighthouse<\/em><\/li><li><em>Midsommar<\/em><\/li><li><em>Waves<\/em><\/li><li><strong><em>A Prayer Before Dawn<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>First Cow<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Eric Andre: Legalize Everything<\/em><\/strong> (Netflix)<\/li><li><strong><em>Ramy<\/em><\/strong> (Hulu)<\/li><li><strong><em>Euphoria<\/em><\/strong> (HBO)<\/li><li><strong><em>Moonbase 8<\/em><\/strong> (Showtime)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Gems-FB-share-1024x536.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Gems-FB-share-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Gems-FB-share-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Gems-FB-share-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Gems-FB-share.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Uncut Gems (2019)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though this is one of their more recent releases,<em> Uncut Gems<\/em> holds a special place within A24 as it is their highest grossing movie to date. In this movie, we have <strong>Adam Sandler<\/strong> who delivers one of his best performances as jeweler\/gambler, <strong>Howard Ratner<\/strong>. The <strong>Safdie Brothers<\/strong> do a good job at keeping you guessing during the movie and the movie&#8217;s score keeps you anxious. <em>Uncut Gems<\/em> is anxiety inducing because of it&#8217;s fast pace and unpredictability. The final 30 minutes or so of the movie is incredible and will having you trying to pick your jaw up off the floor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0823_good-times-1-e1503517038585-1024x525.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0823_good-times-1-e1503517038585-1024x525.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0823_good-times-1-e1503517038585-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0823_good-times-1-e1503517038585-768x394.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0823_good-times-1-e1503517038585-1536x787.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0823_good-times-1-e1503517038585.jpg 1615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Good Time (2017)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Good Time<\/em> is another Safdie Brothers film and it stars<strong> Robert Pattinson <\/strong>as <strong>Connie Nikas<\/strong>; <strong>Benny Safdie<\/strong> also stars in the movie as <strong>Nick Nikas<\/strong>. In this movie we see the Nikas brothers robbing a bank and when Nick gets caught, it&#8217;s up to Connie to get him out of jail. This movie is thrill ride as Pattinson&#8217;s character races around town trying to collect money to bail out his brother. Much like <em>Uncut Gems<\/em>, this movie can be unpredictable at times. The ending isn&#8217;t as climactic as <em>Uncut Gems<\/em>, but it definitely has you shook up a bit. I was very fond of the cinematography in this movie; the camera work and the tone it sets is very nice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/a24-midsommar-auction.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/a24-midsommar-auction.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/a24-midsommar-auction-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/a24-midsommar-auction-768x461.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Midsommar (2019)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ari Aster<\/strong> crushed it with<em> Midsommar<\/em>; he wrote and directed the movie. I mentioned before how <em>Uncut Gems <\/em>was anxiety inducing, but <em>Midsommar<\/em> takes that to a different level. In this movie we see a group of friends take a trip to a festival of sorts in Sweden; everything is off as soon as they arrive. This movie&#8217;s pace picks up speed fast and doesn&#8217;t slow down. <strong>Florence Pugh<\/strong> delivers an incredible performance as <strong>Dani<\/strong>. I&#8217;ve never seen someone cry through almost the entire movie like she does. Her character is confused and very stressed throughout the movie; the audience can almost feel these emotions as well, at least in my experience they did. <em>Midsommar<\/em> is a movie that will definitely get your heart racing and have you on the edge of your seat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/WireAP_366eeccce0824600a6119ac828316519_16x9_1600-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/WireAP_366eeccce0824600a6119ac828316519_16x9_1600-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/WireAP_366eeccce0824600a6119ac828316519_16x9_1600-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/WireAP_366eeccce0824600a6119ac828316519_16x9_1600-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/WireAP_366eeccce0824600a6119ac828316519_16x9_1600-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/WireAP_366eeccce0824600a6119ac828316519_16x9_1600.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The Lighthouse (2019)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last but not least, we have this movie. <em>The Lighthouse <\/em>is one of the weirdest movies I&#8217;ve ever watched, and I loved every bit of it. The way the film is shot is amazing; it has a ratio of 1.19:1 and is shot in black and white. This is labeled as a horror movie, but it&#8217;s more a suspenseful movie than horror; that&#8217;s just my opinion. The movie has fantastic score and phenomenal acting with <strong>Willem Dafoe <\/strong>and Robert Pattinson, but the overall plot can be confusing towards the end. This movie also caused quite the controversy because of the something happens; numerous theaters weren&#8217;t allowed to show it. The Lighthouse is a slow movie, but that only helps build the suspense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have the chance to watch any of these movies, I highly recommend watching them.
