He is one of the founding members of the Hip-Hop collective <strong>Pro-Era<\/strong> and also a member of the Hip-Hop supergroup <strong>Beast Coast<\/strong>. Joey started gaining major traction when he released his 2012 mixtape \u201c1999\u201d, Joey was only 17 when 1999 was created and his prodigious skills as a rapper instantly earned him the respect of many fans and critics. <strong>B4.DA.$$<\/strong> is Joey\u2019s official debut album and it was released on January 20, 2015. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Track List : <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Save The Children <\/li><li>Greenbax <\/li><li>Paper Trail$<\/li><li>Piece of Mind <\/li><li>Big Dusty <\/li><li>Hazeus View <\/li><li>Like Me <\/li><li>Belly of the Beast <\/li><li>No. 99 <\/li><li>Christ Conscious <\/li><li>On &amp; On <\/li><li>Escape 120 <\/li><li>Black Beetles <\/li><li>O.C.B<\/li><li>Curry Chicken <\/li><li>Run Up On Ya <\/li><li>Teach Me <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joey is giving a tribute to the classic Boom bap era Hip-hop on pretty much all of B4.DA.$$, and it mostly worked in his favor. All of the instrumentals have a classy shine to it. They\u2019re spacey, they\u2019re smooth, and Joey delivers some excellent verses on top of them. Joey explores a variety of topics and emotions throughout the album, the intro \u201cSave the Children\u201d finds Joey talking about the power and the significance of his music, his wealth, his heritage and so on. Joey\u2019s wordplay and flows are impressive from the get-go. Paper Trail$ is about the downside of fame and how money changes people. On some of the tracks, Joey is just rapping like his life is on the line, \u201cChrist Concious\u201d and \u201cNo.99\u201d are both some of the most hard-hitting songs on the album, or in Joey\u2019s entire catalogue period. The song \u201cBig Dusty\u201d is pretty blunt, aggressive and straightforward as well.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/api.time.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/joey-bada.jpg?w=800&amp;quality=85\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On several occasions, Joey\u2019s lyrics are also emotionally moving and sometimes distressing. Joey explores topics such as death and afterlife and gives a heart-wrenching shoutout to his late mentor <strong>Capital Steez<\/strong> on \u201cOn &amp; On\u201d. The album\u2019s bleakest moment comes with \u201cBlack Beetles\u201d, a poignant track about feelings like inferiority and how his life post-fame isn\u2019t as great as he had thought. The vocal sample in the track is dreary and forlorn and Joey\u2019s rapping is incredible, too. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cHow many lives will they take today? We ain&#8217;t equal<\/p><p>Another world war sequel a doomsday prequel<\/p><p>This ain&#8217;t the world we thought it was when we as in pre-school<\/p><p>Sometimes it&#8217;s hard to be cool, sometimes I feel like I&#8217;m see-thru<\/p><p>Sometimes I really wish, yo I wish that I could be you.\u201d <\/p><cite>Black Beetles<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a few tracks in the album that didn\u2019t wow me the way others did, \u201cOCB\u201d is one of them. The subject matter of the song is quite interesting and the track isn\u2019t terrible by any measures but it\u2019s Joey\u2019s singing in the chorus that really underwhelmed me. The bonus tracks \u201cRun Up On Ya\u201d and \u201cTeach Me\u201d were pretty weak as well, especially the latter. The somewhat upbeat feeling of the track made for a very jarring moment considering how jazzy, nostalgic and dusty the rest of the album sounded. B4.DA.$$ didn\u2019t do much to break new ground musically, nor is it a defining moment for Joey, and choosing a throw-back aesthetic for one\u2019s debut is an awkward choice at best but Joey\u2019s rapping, beat selection and the overall quality of the tracks are so impressive that they make up for most of the flaws the album had. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.complex.com\/complex\/images\/c_fill,dpr_auto,f_auto,q_90,w_1400\/fl_lossy,pg_1\/dosjbyviovdhgx5lowgd\/joey-badass-pony\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rating : A-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">B4.DA.$$ contains tracks written by <strong>Action Bronson, ASTR, Basquiat, BJ the Chicago Kid, Chronixx, Chuck Strangers, David Porter, DJ Premier, Dyemond Lewis, Elle Varner, Freddie Joachim, Hit-Boy, Inspectah Deck, Isaac Hayes, J Dilla, Jimmy Heath,<\/strong> Joey Bada$$, <strong>Jonathan Davis, Kiesza, Kirk Knight, Lee Bannon, Ma Dukes, Maverick Sabre, Method Man, Nas, Raekwon, Raury, The Roots, RZA, Samiyam, The Soul Rebels &amp; Statik Selektah and production by ASTR, Basquiat, Chuck Strangers, DJ Premier, Freddie Joachim, Hit-Boy, J Dilla, Kirk Knight, Lee Bannon, The Roots, Samiyam &amp; Statik Selektah<\/strong>.
