With Star War<\/em>\u2019<\/strong>s cinematic efforts having reached its temporary conclusion, another galactic franchise, Star Trek<\/em><\/strong>, has had its cinematic future seemingly stuck in \u201cdevelopmental hell\u201d <\/strong>since Star Trek Beyond<\/em><\/strong> was released back in 2016. However, fans of the long and prosperous franchise were given a beacon of hope, if recent comments from one of the cast members are to believed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zachary Quinto, who portrays Spock<\/strong> in the more recent Star Trek<\/em> films, was a guest on CBS\u2019 The Talk <\/em><\/strong>this past week to promote his upcoming Netflix<\/strong> movie The Boys in the Band<\/strong><\/em>, and was asked if he would be interested in reprising the role in a future Star Trek<\/em> movie. Judging by his response, it seems like him and the rest of the cast are eager to get the call to return. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAbsolutely! We talk about it all the time as the crew of the Enterprise. We are all incredibly good friends in real life. Although Quinto\u2019s opening remarks may appear as good news to fans clamoring for another Star Trek<\/em> feature film, he does backtrack a bit and even expressed some pessimism when it comes to the possibility of a fourth Star Trek<\/em> film gracing the big screen in the near future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt seems like a bit of a saturated market at this point, so I’m not sure what the plans are for the feature film versions of the franchise, but we’re all here if they want to beam us up. It’s already thriving in the television format with Discovery<\/em> and Picard<\/em> and the spinoffs, I can’t even keep track of how many new Star Trek stories are being told since our last film in 2016.\u201d<\/p>Zachary Quinto on Star Trek<\/em>\u2019s \u201csaturated\u201d market. As referenced by Quinto, since Star Trek Beyond<\/em> was released in theaters, a whole new era of Star Trek has been ushered in thanks to Star Trek: Picard<\/strong> <\/em>and Star Trek: Discovery<\/strong> <\/em>bringing the franchise back to the small screen. The storylines of Discovery <\/em>and Picard <\/em>currently take place in opposite ends of the Star Trek <\/em>timeline. Discovery <\/em>is set in the years before The Original Series<\/em><\/strong>, while the Patrick Stewart<\/strong> led Picard <\/em>picks up almost a full decade after The Next Generation<\/strong> <\/em>era ended. Quinto and his fellow cast are considered part of the Kelvin Timeline<\/a><\/strong> within the larger Star Trek universe. The Kelvin Timeline is an alternative universe created when the Romulan Nero<\/strong> traveled to 2233 and destroyed the Federation Starship <\/strong>U.S.S. Kelvin<\/strong>.<\/em> Star Trek<\/em> (2009), Star Trek: Into the Darkness<\/em><\/strong> (2013), and Star Trek Beyond<\/em> (2016) are all considered canon within the Kelvin timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though the Kelvin cast hasn\u2019t appeared since 2016\u2019s Beyond<\/em>, it was reported that a sequel set to bring back Chris Hemsworth\u2019s George Kirk <\/em><\/strong> was in early production. Production on that film was moving full steam ahead until salary negotiations between Chris Pine<\/strong> and Chris Hemsworth ultimately shelved the project completely. Since then rumors have swirled about the franchise\u2019s future, including a future Rated R project<\/a> being produced by acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino<\/strong>, which would have reportedly featured the return of the \u201cKelvin\u201d cast. Another rumor<\/a> pointed to Paramount Pictures<\/strong> moving forward with former Trek<\/em> and Into the Darkness<\/em> director J.J. Abrams<\/strong> set to produce and Fargo<\/em>\/Legion<\/em><\/strong> creator Noah Hawley<\/strong> writing and directing the next installment of franchise. As of today, Paramount Pictures is said to be mulling multiple options for Star Trek<\/em>, with the projects from Tarantino and Hawley believed to be shelved for the time being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To fans of the franchise, it\u2019s been far too long since the cast of the U.S.S. Enterprise <\/strong><\/em>went on their next mission to explore the unknowns regions of space on the big screen. While Quinto’s Spock and the rest of the cast were universally praised for their respective efforts, the franchise never found a huge amount of success at the box office. For the time being, it appears that Paramount views the Star Trek <\/em>franchise at its best in an episodic format, much to the dismay of fans of the franchise\u2019s more recent big screen efforts. Fans, however, can find solace from Quinto\u2019s comments knowing that he and the rest of the cast are eager to return for a fourth Star Trek<\/em> movie in the Kelvin timeline, whenever that may be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
