{"id":30120,"date":"2020-09-14T20:24:30","date_gmt":"2020-09-15T03:24:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/?p=30120"},"modified":"2020-09-14T20:24:33","modified_gmt":"2020-09-15T03:24:33","slug":"album-review-meet-the-woo-vol-1-by-pop-smoke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/?p=30120","title":{"rendered":"[Album Review] \u201cMeet The Woo Vol. 1\u201d by Pop Smoke"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>With a set of ominous, foreboding trap beats and even grittier rapping on top of them, Pop Smoke\u2019s debut mixtape take the word \u201cCold-blooded\u201d to the next level.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.genius.com\/635ff5c508733b1eba3a01ff72e5fc9e.1000x1000x1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pop Smoke<\/strong> is a Brooklyn rapper whose music career took off with the hit single \u201cWelcome to the Party\u201d in 2019. <strong>Meet the Woo<\/strong> is his debut mixtape\/album and was released on July 26, 2019. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Track List : <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Meet the Woo<\/li><li>Welcome to the Party <\/li><li>Hawk Em <\/li><li>Better Have Your Gun<\/li><li>Scenario <\/li><li>Dior <\/li><li>Feeling <\/li><li>PTSD <\/li><li>Brother Man<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meet the Woo includes some of the grimiest, darkest and most hard-hitting songs in Pop Smoke\u2019s entire catalogue. The instrumental for the intro, \u201cMeet the Woo\u201d produced by <strong>808Melo<\/strong> is atmospheric and dusty, and right off the bat, the track just radiates this claustrophobic, unnerving energy. Pop Smoke\u2019s lyrics contain a lot of references to gang violence, money, women, pretty regular stuff for a Rapper in Pop\u2019s lane to talk about but it\u2019s Pop Smoke\u2019s voice and his murderous junkyard-dog energy that makes his music stand out. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Pop-Smoke-2-1392x884.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWelcome to the Party\u201d is another savage banger. Vicious drill beat, knocking 808s and the bass is just overwhelming. Pop Smoke is as villainous as usual on this track, too. The lyrics find Pop Smoke rallying for other people like him to come together, with of course, a lot of bars about homicide, guns and drugs. \u201cHawk Em\u201d is a ruthless murder anthem. The instrumental on this song, in comparison to the tracks prior is a little less blustering but Pop Smoke\u2019s rapping does make up for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thefader-res.cloudinary.com\/private_images\/w_2400,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:best\/F119_Popsmoke_Hasan_fpo_11_bu2w5q\/pop-smoke-welcome-to-the-party-dior-profile.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pop Smoke operates on a similar level of energy on \u201cBetter Have Your Gun\u201d. The beat is grand and Pop Smoke\u2019s machismo is off the charts. \u201cDior\u201d is the biggest hit on this album. A track titled after a luxury brand from a drill rapper known for his braggadocious and grandiose lyrics, no further explanation needed, you know what you\u2019re getting into at this point. We do hit a short low point with the song \u201cFeeling\u201d, not that the track is terrible or anything but by that point in the album, Pop Smoke has already rapped about everything that he addresses in the song, in a better fashion so the track felt relatively forgettable. But thankfully, things kick into high gear once again on the track \u201cPTSD\u201d which is a wonderful, spine-chilling track about exactly the title says. And the outro \u201cBrother Man\u201d is a death-before-dishonor, ride-or-die anthem, true to Pop\u2019s personality. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An argument could be made that Meet The Woo is one-dimensional, which is true to an extent. Both the topics and the instrumentals don\u2019t really feel varied at all throughout the project. But if anything, that just shows how big of a loss Pop Smoke\u2019s unfortunate passing was. His musical journey was barely getting started. The amount of potential lost is gargantuan, and that\u2019s putting it lightly. All in all, Meet the Woo is a quality mixtape that not only solidified Pop Smoke\u2019s artistic status but also revitalized its genre, drill music at least to a certain degree. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rating : A-<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meet the Woo contains songs written by 808 Melo, M\u0142ody G.R.O., Pop Smoke, and Rico Beats and production by 808 Melo, Rico Beats and SoSpecial.
