Shortly thereafter, Twitter lit up with marked opposition to the game&#8217;s premise, which focuses on a female streamer being harassed by a stalker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Gamer Girl<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/comicbook.com\/gaming\/news\/gamer-girl-game-fmv-trailer-youtube-playstation\/\">official synopsis<\/a> reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Gamer Girl is a chilling FMV thriller game set in the world of online streaming. Adopt the role of moderator for up and coming streamer \u2018Abicake99\u2019, who\u2019s back online after the mysterious disappearance of her friend Becky. Featuring multi-branched narrative and real-time chat simulation, your role as moderator is to control the stream, level up mod powers, guide Abi\u2019s choices and uncover the threat she faces by an anonymous stalker who hides in the stream\u2019s chat. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Streamer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitch.tv\/djarii\">djarii<\/a> <\/strong>denounced the game, calling it &#8220;basically every girl streamers worst nightmare given life in the form of a video game,&#8221; and continuing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Haven&#39;t women in this industry been abused enough without having a game glorifying this reality to be born?<\/p>&mdash; djarii (@djarii) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/djarii\/status\/1284178628130070529?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 17, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another streamer, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitch.tv\/Lowco\">Lowco<\/a><\/strong>, also pointed to the game&#8217;s unnerving realism:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I won\u2019t be playing that Gamer Girl game because I already play it everyday in real life.<\/p>&mdash; Lowco (@LowcoTV) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LowcoTV\/status\/1284237538048212997?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 17, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twitter user <strong>Ginny Di <\/strong>further elaborated on the game&#8217;s problematic perspective toward female streamers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If you mod for a streamer, you are not her guardian. You are not in charge of deciding whether or not she&#39;s in a healthy relationship. This white knight fantasy of rescuing the pretty gamer girl from her abusive boyfriend is DANGEROUS. I pray this game isn&#39;t actually released.<\/p>&mdash; Ginny Di \ud83c\udf37 (@itsginnydi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/itsginnydi\/status\/1284582204958371840?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 18, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both <strong>PlayStation<\/strong> and Wales Interactive reacted promptly to the fallout, removing the trailer from their <strong>YouTube<\/strong> channels. The trailer, which you can watch below, is still viewable on some channels, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCmrsjRoN3g5TtOGIlq-sQSg\">XboxViewTV<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gamer Girl - Official Teaser Trailer (2020)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2mFHRlVNP3Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wales Interactive has released this statement <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WalesInter\/status\/1283873036777787392\">via Twitter<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<em>Gamer Girl<\/em>\u00a0is about the impact user comments and actions have on a streamer\u2019s mental health and wellbeing. The reason why FMV Future created the game was to raise the issue of the toxic environment which can often appear online behind the anonymity of a username.\u00a0<em>Gamer Girl<\/em>\u00a0was co-written by Alexandra Burton, the lead actress who improvised the entire script. The research into the streaming content of\u00a0<em>Gamer Girl<\/em>\u00a0took 4 years and the dev team at FMV Future interviewed dozens of female streamers most of whom have experienced abuse of various kinds online \u2014 some have even shared their experiences during interviews within the game. Players start the game as one of Abi\u2019s friends whom she trusts, and it is their job to make the channel a success but also to guide the stream to keep Abi in a positive frame of mind. Online abuse is real and is still happening every day \u2014\u00a0<em>Gamer Girl<\/em>\u00a0seeks to raise awareness of this issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Gamer Girl <\/em>was scheduled to launch for <strong>Steam<\/strong>, <strong>PS4<\/strong>, <strong>Xbox One<\/strong>, and <strong>Nintendo Switch<\/strong> in September 2020. However, due to the recent backlash over its controversial premise, it is unclear if Wales Interactive will be moving forward with the game&#8217;s release.
