{"id":25774,"date":"2020-06-29T13:19:49","date_gmt":"2020-06-29T20:19:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/?p=25774"},"modified":"2021-06-15T14:09:40","modified_gmt":"2021-06-15T21:09:40","slug":"removal-of-community-episode-from-streaming-services-cause-dvd-sales-to-skyrocket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/?p=25774","title":{"rendered":"Removal of &#8220;Community&#8221; Episode from Streaming Services Cause DVD Sales to Skyrocket"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/EbdNDarXgAAGj6X-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/EbdNDarXgAAGj6X-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/EbdNDarXgAAGj6X-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/EbdNDarXgAAGj6X-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/EbdNDarXgAAGj6X.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Netflix<\/strong> and <strong>Hulu<\/strong> have removed a fan-favorite episode of <strong><em>Community<\/em><\/strong> from their streaming services in the last few days. &#8216;&#8221;dvanced Dungeons and Dragons&#8221; was removed due to its use of &#8220;blackface,&#8221; leaving a gap in the middle of Season 2 of the beloved show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the episode, the group finds themselves playing a game of <strong>Dungeons and Dragons<\/strong> where Chang (played by Ken Jeong) enters the game with black makeup covering the entirety of his face, along with a white wig, contact lenses, and pointed elf like ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/f6752d7fa070ee37d5ee6e8f45c2ca7c.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25776\" width=\"587\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/f6752d7fa070ee37d5ee6e8f45c2ca7c.jpg 400w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/f6752d7fa070ee37d5ee6e8f45c2ca7c-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The &#8220;blackface&#8221; was actually pointed out by the other characters with Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), a black woman, asking, &#8220;So we&#8217;re just going to ignore the hate crime, huh?&#8221; Chang responds, &#8220;I&#8217;m a dark elf or a drow.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The implications of the &#8220;blackface&#8221; were deemed to be in poor taste, as <strong>Netflix<\/strong> took it off of their streaming service, with <strong>Hulu<\/strong> following shortly behind a few hours later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The call to remove it was fairly shocking considering the show itself recognized and repudiated the &#8220;blackface&#8221; implications. With so many early-to-mid 2000&#8217;s sitcoms featuring gay or stereotypical jokes, I&#8217;m not sure what scenes or shows will be removed from services next. Considering this use of &#8220;blackface&#8221; was deemed worth removieng from streaming services, it makes me wonder about the film <strong>Tropic Thunder<\/strong>. Like in this Community episode, the film recognized and disputes the use of &#8220;blackface.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The removal of the episode has made sales of the show on DVD skyrocket. Many places including <strong>Amazon, Best Buy, Target,<\/strong> and<strong> Walmart<\/strong> are completely sold out of the entire show for every season and the collection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/IMG_2949.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25777\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/IMG_2949.png 720w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/IMG_2949-300x163.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people are trying to take advantage of the shortage of DVD&#8217;s selling seasons and collections by massively scalping the prices. Some are even searching for hundreds of dollars on eBay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m not sure how long the digital versions will be available, but my advice is to keep any physical or digital copy of anything that has similar controversial scenes.
