{"id":17672,"date":"2019-12-30T12:07:22","date_gmt":"2019-12-30T20:07:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/?p=17672"},"modified":"2020-01-13T23:33:09","modified_gmt":"2020-01-14T07:33:09","slug":"episode-ix-writer-explains-biggest-challenge-posed-by-the-last-jedi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/?p=17672","title":{"rendered":"Episode IX Writer Explains Biggest Challenge Posed By &#8220;The Last Jedi&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Rise of Skywalker<\/em> co-writer Chris Terrio has recently discussed that the decision to kill off Supreme Leader Snoke in <em>The Last Jedi<\/em> was the most challenging roadblock in writing the Episode IX, concerning Kylo Ren&#8217;s character specifically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/kylo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/kylo.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/kylo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/kylo-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awardsdaily.com\/2019\/12\/24\/star-wars-screenwriter-chris-terrio-on-ending-the-42-year-skywalker-saga\/\">Awards Daily<\/a><\/em>, Terrio elaborated on the problem.  The plan Abrams had set up in <em>The Force Awakens<\/em> was to have Kylo be torn between light and dark throughout the trilogy, but Snoke&#8217;s death complicated his character arc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;J.J. and I felt we needed to find a way in which he could be redeemed, and that gets tricky at the end of&nbsp;<em>Episode VIII<\/em>&nbsp;because Snoke is gone. The biggest bad guy in the galaxy at that moment seemingly is Kylo Ren.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With no villain for Rey and the eventually redeemed Ben Solo to fight in the finale to the Skywalker Saga, Terrio and Abrams had to look at who could be behind everything throughout the story of the sequel trilogy.  The final idea was to make the big bad an &#8220;old evil that didn&#8217;t die.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;The entity known as Palpatine in this version \u2014 his body died in&nbsp;<em>Return of the Jedi<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 is patient and has been waiting. He dug his fox hole and has been waiting for his chance to re-establish his total domination.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colin Treverrow, original director of the film before Abrams took the director&#8217;s chair, said that Palpatine was not part of the narrative when he was attached to the film.  However, Terrio implied that Palpatine was in the cards before he was officially written into Episode IX, saying that Palpatine &#8220;was certainly discussed and was discussed before [he] ever came on [the project].&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/crusty-palpy-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/crusty-palpy-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/crusty-palpy-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/crusty-palpy-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/crusty-palpy.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terrio also went on to explain how bringing back Palpatine ties up the saga in a way that makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Ren and his devotion to the idea of his grandfather. The voice that he\u2019s always heard in his head. The certain similarities between Snoke and Palpatine.  The intention was that, by the time you get to&nbsp;<em>Episode IX<\/em>, you realize there were real reasons this is all happening.
