Of the top ten 2019 box office smashes, Disney has produced eight, with the exceptions being <em>Joker<\/em> and <em>It Chapter 2<\/em>.  This news follows the recent release of <em>Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/rise.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/rise.jpg 800w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/rise-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/rise-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the latest installment in the Star Wars franchise raking in $175.5 million domestically in its open weekend alone, <em>The Rise of Skywalker<\/em> has become the 10th highest grossing film in the U.S. in 2019, and will probably surpass this as more moviegoers buy tickets in the days to come.  However, Episode IX is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Disney&#8217;s profits this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking back at 2019, Disney has been responsible for almost all of the year&#8217;s surefire blockbuster hits.   Not only is the company responsible for Star Wars, but also Marvel.  Films like <em>Avengers: Endgame<\/em>, <em>Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em>, and <em>Captain Marvel<\/em> were all certain successes for Disney, with <em>Avengers<\/em> beating out <em>Avatar<\/em> for highest grossing film of all time, and the latter two films surpassing the billion dollar mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other films, under Disney Pixar, were released to the anticipation of dedicated fans.  These include the summer release of <em>Toy Story 4<\/em>, which also managed to rake in $1 billion, and the highly anticipated <em>Frozen II<\/em>, which began showing in theaters in late November.  Throwing the live action remakes of <em>The Lion King<\/em> and <em>Aladdin<\/em>, two acclaimed 90s animated movies, into the mix, it isn&#8217;t all too surprising that Disney has dominated box office numbers in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"970\" height=\"545\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/duckbunny.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/duckbunny.jpg 970w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/duckbunny-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/duckbunny-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a matter of fact, every year since 2014, Disney has left a discernible mark  on the box office.  Just last year, in 2018, <em>Black Panther<\/em>, <em>Avengers Infinity War<\/em>, and <em>Incredibles 2<\/em> were the three highest grossing domestic films in the U.S.  Kevin Mayer, head of direct-to-consumer products for Disney,  commented to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/12\/23\/21034937\/disney-star-wars-box-office-2019-marvel-pixar-star-wars-avengers-lion-king-frozen\"><em>The Verge<\/em><\/a> about the company&#8217;s prominence in the film industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;We are not embarrassed by the fact that we have big blockbuster movies that people enjoy.  If you look at the box office success, that\u2019s an indicator of how popular and how embraced these films are by real audiences.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the new year coming, however, it would seem Disney does not have nearly as much to offer as it did this year.  The live-action <em>Mulan<\/em> is coming, as well as Marvel films <em>Black Widow<\/em> and <em>The Eternals<\/em>, but that is it.
