{"id":17273,"date":"2019-11-25T12:49:06","date_gmt":"2019-11-25T20:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/?p=17273"},"modified":"2019-11-25T12:49:13","modified_gmt":"2019-11-25T20:49:13","slug":"josh-trank-gives-an-honest-review-of-fant4stic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/?p=17273","title":{"rendered":"Josh Trank gives an honest review of &#8220;FANT4STIC&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s as much a review of Trank himself as it is the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"691\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191125_193637-691x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191125_193637-691x1024.jpg 691w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191125_193637-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191125_193637-768x1139.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191125_193637.jpg 957w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As highlighted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slashfilm.com\/josh-trank-reviews-fantastic-four\/\">Slashfilm<\/a>, Josh Trank recently took to <a href=\"https:\/\/letterboxd.com\/film\/fantastic-four\/\">Letterboxd<\/a> and reviewed the film that caused him so much anguish and changed his entire outlook on the film industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">20th Century Fox had rebooted the Fantastic Four franchise after the critical failure of 2005&#8217;s <em>Fantastic Four<\/em> and 2007&#8217;s <em>Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer<\/em>. Instead of the family friendly, almost goofy comedy of the first two films, 20th Century Fox decided to take the film down the route of being a more dark and gritty film, helmed by Trank who had proven himself a very capable director after the success of 2012&#8217;s <em>Chronicle<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem the film, and Trank had was studio interference. The movie suffered from being badly edited with plenty of footage missing that was in the trailers and a disjointed story along with poor visual effects work. Trank suffered from severe mental illness, with depression and anxiety plaguing his personality for almost the full 4 years that it took to complete the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screenshot_20191125-195837_Opera-1024x563.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screenshot_20191125-195837_Opera-1024x563.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screenshot_20191125-195837_Opera-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screenshot_20191125-195837_Opera-768x422.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screenshot_20191125-195837_Opera.jpg 1039w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trank starts his review off with a general assessment of the film:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The movie is ALRIGHT.<br><\/p><p>I was expecting it to be much worse than it was. I literally haven\u2019t seen it since like two weeks before it came out, and I was in a heavily fucking traumatized state of mind.\u00a0Why? Eh, save that for another time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continues to get into the review and starts off by talking about those who worked on the movie:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Anyway, movie review:\u00a0<br><\/p><p>Great cast.<br><\/p><p>Everyone in the film is a great actor, and overall there is a movie in there, somewhere. And that cast deserves to be in THAT movie.\u00a0Everyone who worked on Fant4stic clearly wanted to be making THAT movie.\u00a0But&#8230;. ultimately&#8230; It wasn\u2019t.\u00a0<br><\/p><p>Did I make that movie they deserved to be in?<br><\/p><p>To be honest?<br><\/p><p>I can\u2019t tell.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a mini-commentary on the movement around DC fans rallying around Zack Snyder in an effort to prompt WB to release the Snyder Cut of <em>Justice League<\/em>, after the theatrical cut of <em>Justice League<\/em> had two very different styles vying for dominance, and asks the question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>What I can tell is there are TWO different movies in one movie competing to be that movie.\u00a0<br><\/p><p>Is there a #releasethetrankcut?\u00a0<br><\/p><p>Doesn\u2019t matter.<br><\/p><p>I\u2019m not Zack Snyder.\u00a0<br><\/p><p>Zack Snyder is a storied, iconic, legendary filmmaker who has been knocking it out of the fucking park since I was in high school.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1020\" height=\"554\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screenshot_20191125-201716_Opera.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screenshot_20191125-201716_Opera.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screenshot_20191125-201716_Opera-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screenshot_20191125-201716_Opera-768x417.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trank notes of himself during this period:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Me? Then?<br><\/p><p>I was 29 years old, making my 2nd film, in a situation more complicated than anything a 2nd time filmmaker should\u2019ve walked into.<br><\/p><p>That said&#8230; I don\u2019t regret any of it.<br><\/p><p>It\u2019s a part of me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trank does finalise the review on a hopeful note, however, when he gives his opinion on who he thinks should direct the next Fantastic Four film:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>And I just hope Peyton Reed makes the next Fantastic Four and crushes it. And that I get a cameo.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peyton Reed, director of Marvel&#8217;s <em>Ant-Man<\/em> and its sequel <em>Ant-Man and The Wasp<\/em> is Josh Trank&#8217;s pick for the next reboot of Marvel&#8217;s first family, and this time it would fit into the ever expanding MCU, and with the experience of working for Marvel, perhaps Reed could pull off the next iteration of superhero team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Josh Trank&#8217;s next film is <em>Fonzo<\/em>, following Tom Hardy&#8217;s Al Capone struggling with ageing, the onset of dementia and the ghosts of his criminal past.
