{"id":17022,"date":"2019-11-04T14:55:52","date_gmt":"2019-11-04T22:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/?p=17022"},"modified":"2020-01-13T22:44:32","modified_gmt":"2020-01-14T06:44:32","slug":"martin-scorsese-weighs-in-on-joker-and-why-he-left-the-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/?p=17022","title":{"rendered":"Martin Scorsese Weighs in on &#8216;Joker&#8217; and Why He Left the Project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renowned director Martin Scorsese (<em>Taxi Driver<\/em>, <em>Wolf of Wall Street<\/em>) has broken the silence on his opinion of <em>Joker<\/em>, a film with many nods to his past work and a project that he had been attached to previously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scorsese had been involved with the production of <em>Joker <\/em>for four years, before he ultimately stepped away.  When the news broke that a Joker standalone film was in development in August 2017, Scorsese was instantly reported as a producer of the film, and, at the time, was even rumored as a potential director who could maybe get Leonardo DiCaprio (<em>The Revenant<\/em>, <em>Once Upon a Time in Hollywood<\/em>) to play the main role.  Ultimately, Scorsese left the project as a producer when it was officially greenlit in July 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"798\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/scorsese.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17025\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/scorsese.jpg 798w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/scorsese-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/scorsese-768x404.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He recently went on to explain this decision with BBC.  &#8220;I know the film very well,&#8221; Scorsese said.  &#8220;I thought about it a lot over the last four years and decided I did not have the time for it.  It was personal reasons why I didn&#8217;t get involved.  But I know the script very well.&#8221;  Scorsese also praised the film&#8217;s energy and Joaquin Phoenix&#8217;s performance as Arthur Fleck, calling <em>Joker<\/em> &#8220;remarkable work.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, from back when he was still attached to the project, there was one thing that he found off-putting regarding the film, and that is how Arthur Fleck evolves into a comic book character by the end of the movie.  &#8220;I don\u2019t know if I make the next step into this character developing into a comic book character.  You follow?&#8221; Scorsese said.  &#8220;He develops into an abstraction. It doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s bad art, it\u2019s just not for me\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/joker-bathroom.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17028\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/joker-bathroom.jpg 696w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/joker-bathroom-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The superhero films, as I\u2019ve said, are another art form. They are not easy to make. There\u2019s a lot of very talented people doing good work and a lot of young people really, really enjoy them,&#8221; he continued.  This relates to comments the filmmaker had made in October about the Marvel films, as he declared they were &#8220;not cinema.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joaquin Phoenix himself also had similar opinions to Scorsese when Joker was in development.  As <em>Joker<\/em> director Todd Phillips explained in an interview in September, Phoenix had his hesitations about the role, as it was so deeply interwoven into the Batman mythos.  &#8220;It would have been easier for him if the movie was called \u2018Arthur\u2019 and had nothing to do with any of that stuff.
