They finally sold the North American rights to GKIDS a year or so before their 2012 $4billion purchase of Star Wars. While this was a publicly known sale, many people paid that detail little attention and started to wonder why no news about Studio Ghibli films being added to Disney+ was being released during Disney&#8217;s media blitz in announcing all the offerings available on their upcoming streaming service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"354\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kikis-delivery-service.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kikis-delivery-service.jpg 850w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kikis-delivery-service-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kikis-delivery-service-768x320.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, recently, some outlets have reported that Studio Ghibli would buck the trend and stay off streaming only to have backpedal when it was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GKIDSfilms\/status\/1184869480721108992\">announced<\/a> HBO Max will have the sole North American streaming rights starting in 2020. So how did this happen? Well it goes back to the distribution rights being sold to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2011\/film\/news\/gkids-to-release-miyazaki-toons-in-u-s-1118042372\/\">GKIDS<\/a> Films back in 2011. This meant that all the films that had been distributed for almost 3 decades by Disney would now be in the hands of GKIDS. For the next 7+ years GKIDS Films kept my favorite Ghibli films, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki\u2019s Delivery Service, Howl\u2019s Moving Castle and many others existed in, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2019\/10\/15\/20828843\/studio-ghibli-movies-miyazaki-streaming-netflix-disney-plus\">Polygon<\/a> put it, \u201ca rare space: theaters and for-purchase video\u201d only. &nbsp;So GKIDS Films had to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GKIDSfilms\/status\/1184879794955010048\">clarify <\/a>that the \u201cquote referenced\u201d in various articles \u201cwas from a GKIDS statement in 2018.\u201d GKIDS Films also mentions that \u201cNeither GKIDS nor Studio Ghibli were contacted by those writers for confirmation or comment prior to publication. Otherwise, we would have provided comment.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/howls.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16571\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/howls.jpg 760w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/howls-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With how traditional Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli have been in the past, it was not a big leap to rely on an official comment from within the last year or so. I have read a few of the articles written before the official GKIDS Films post and they are good reads by Ghibli fans, so I don&#8217;t feel they should feel bad for having to post updated articles.
