But it is this writers opinion that the house that DC built has suffered from choices that past leaders have made. I do feel that recent releases such as Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Shazam have proved that when they give a storyteller the creative freedom to express themselves that it can both be profitable and well received by fans(critics be damned). I do believe that we have a chance to see something big with The New Gods. One of the more well-known recent caretakers of this part of DC is Tom King, so when he likens the director Ava DuVernay to Kirby himself, that is something what carries some weight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/dccomicsmovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Jack_Kirby.jpg?resize=800%2C320\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"160\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tom recently said to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/authors\/profiles\/article\/81330-even-superheroes-get-the-blues.html\">Publisher Weekly<\/a> :\u201c\u2019I feel like I have this genius, Jack Kirby, who created this (series) and this genius Ava DuVernay,\u201d he explains. \u201cI see them as parallel figures, both taking their uniquely American backgrounds and using them to push American art forward into places it\u2019s never been before. I feel like it\u2019s my job to bring those two geniuses to together and to make it work.\u2019\u201d It is King\u2019s suggestion that the two are parallel but need to be brought together that is the most intriguing. Simple, we look\nat the man who made it. With the shared trauma from 9-11, King wanted to\ncontribute to the betterment of his country, so he did what any other comic\nbook intern (Marvel and DC) does, he signed up to work for the CIA. And armed\nwith nothing more than his encyclopedic knowledge of Thor origin stories, he\nsomehow bested one guy with \u201csix PhDs in foreign languages and affairs\u201d and\nanother that was a \u201cspecial forces dude who was ready to fight.\u201d His seven\nyears with the agency working to \u201cstop the bad guys from doing bad things,\u201d\njust wasn\u2019t allowing him to \u201cbe the best father I could and also be in the\nCIA.\u201d His wife\u2019s job as a lawyer allowed him the time to write <em>A Once Crowded Sky<\/em>(2013). This got him\nhis next job writing for DC, with runs on Grayson, Green Lantern, and Batman.\nAnd after a stop back at Marvel to write The Vision, DC tasked him to take on a\none of Jack Kirby\u2019s creations, Mister Miracle.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dccomics.com\/sites\/default\/files\/Marquee_MisterMiracle-5-cover_5c871ddac27338.42088266.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Mister Miracle and Big Barda<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MM becomes the reason that King\u2019s comparisons between Kirby and DuVernay mean so much for the success of The New Gods. His recent work on both Mister Miracle and Batman earned him four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/heat-vision\/2019-eisner-awards-complete-winners-list-1225835\">Eisner Awards<\/a> (best writer, best limited series, best short story and best graphic album\u2014reprint) in 2019. DuVernay\u2019s work has earned her Academy Award nominations, a Peabody Award win among other, but the some might be quick to only reference her not so well received <em>A Wrinkle In Time<\/em>. And so when King mentions he sees himself as the bridge between the legendary stories first brought to life by Kirby and the modern and powerful story telling from DuVernay, he isn\u2019t out of line. A powerful ship with no rudder is still lost at sea.
