Talking to Empire magazine about his latest release, \u2018The Irishman,\u2019 Scorsese opined that while the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) may thrill audiences, it lacks the depth of true art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI tried, you know?\u201d the director responded when asked if he\nhad seen MCU movies. \u201cBut that\u2019s not cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continued: \u201cHonestly, the closest I can think of them, as\nwell made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the\ncircumstances, is theme parks. It isn\u2019t the cinema of human beings trying to\nconvey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With \u2018Avengers: Endgame\u2019 becoming the highest grossing film in history ($2.9bn at the global box office), Scorsese may be an outlier in opinion. Still, this is not the first time the MCU has been regarded as fluff\u2014fans of Zack Snyder and the DC Extended Universe have long held that the comic book genre can and should be more than the ham-handed comedy of the MCU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scorsese\u2019s remarks come on the eve of director Todd Phillip\u2019s \u2018Joker,\u2019 a revisionist take on the classic DC Comics villain based in-part on classic Scorsese films, which seeks to redefine the comic book genre.
