Every film is good slasher fun, with hormonal 20-somethings pretending to be teenagers running away from the murderous Jason. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jason is an icon in the horror genre that&#8217;s up there with the likes of Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, etc. While slashers aren&#8217;t in their 80&#8217;s peak, <em>Halloween<\/em> (2018) became the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/genres\/chart\/?id=slasher.htm\" target=\"_blank\">highest-grossing film<\/a> in that specific sub-genre, with two sequels on the way. The demand is still there for slashers, so why hasn&#8217;t there been a <em>Friday the 13th<\/em> film since 2009? Well, there are multiple complex reasons why. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paramount and Warner Bros.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Friday the 13th (2009) - Trailer\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ANrq_t617to?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the <em>Friday the 13th<\/em> reboot released in 2009, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"it made respectable earnings (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?id=fridaythe13th09.htm\" target=\"_blank\">it made respectable earnings<\/a>, and it seemed like a sequel would be a no-brainer. According to a Collider interview producers Andrew Form and Bryan Fuller <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"were working on it.  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/collider.com\/producers-andrew-form-and-brad-fuller-talk-friday-the-13th-sequel-originals-vs-remakes-3d-butcherhouse-chronicles-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\">were working on it. <\/a> Then it was <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"considered dead (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dreadcentral.com\/news\/16952\/friday-the-13th-sequel-not-happening\/\" target=\"_blank\">considered dead<\/a> because New Line and Paramount were the rights holders, but at that time the two studios <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"weren't making as many movies anymore due to financial reason (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/collider.com\/exclusive-interview-producers-andrew-form-and-brad-fuller-a-nightmare-on-elm-street-plus-updates-on-monster-squad-ouija-friday-the-13th-2-and-the-nightmare-blu-ray-will-have-a-6-minute-alternat\/\" target=\"_blank\">weren&#8217;t making as many movies anymore due to financial reason<\/a>, and another Jason flick apparently just wasn&#8217;t a priority. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2013 Warner Bros. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"gave up their stake of the franchise (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/heat-vision\/christopher-nolans-interstellar-warner-bros-562879\" target=\"_blank\">gave up their stake of the franchise<\/a> so they could co-produce<em> Interstellar<\/em>, meaning Paramount now had the exclusive rights. Another installment was so close to happening in 2017, but <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Paramount canceled it (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2017\/film\/news\/friday-the-13th-reboot-canceled-paramount-1201979691\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paramount canceled it<\/a> weeks away from production due to various reasons. An expensive budget, <em>Rings<\/em> flopping, and the franchise&#8217;s rights going back to Warner Bros.\/New Line are all factors as to why the studio canceled it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fuller and Form both <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"expressed their disappointment (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.joblo.com\/horror-movies\/news\/exclusive-brad-fuller-andrew-form-on-abandoned-friday-the-13th-sequel-231\" target=\"_blank\">expressed their disappointment<\/a> in not getting the film done. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> <em>One of the biggest heartbreaks of the last couple years was that we were about to make that movie and it fell apart. That still hurts<\/em> <\/p><cite> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joblo.com\/horror-movies\/news\/exclusive-brad-fuller-andrew-form-on-abandoned-friday-the-13th-sequel-231\">Fuller, joblo.com<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fuller went into more detail of the franchise&#8217;s complex rights issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> <em>Fans think it&#8217;s so simple, that if we want to make the movie we can go make it, and that&#8217;s just not the case. There are rights issues; originally, Warner Bros. owned the rights, then Paramount had them for a couple of years, and now I think the rights are reverting back to Warner Bros. At the same time, there&#8217;s this on-going lawsuit with Victor Miller. If there&#8217;s a lawsuit hanging over the rights, it&#8217;s problematic, you can&#8217;t really make the movie until that gets settled. And now the movie is at New Line, and we&#8217;ve made a lot of movies with those guys, but that&#8217;s not our home studio anymore. So the question is, do they want to make the movie with us? If they want to make that movie with us, we will drop what we&#8217;re doing to make that movie.<\/em> <\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joblo.com\/horror-movies\/news\/exclusive-brad-fuller-andrew-form-on-abandoned-friday-the-13th-sequel-231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Fuller, joblo.com (opens in a new tab)\">Fuller, joblo.com<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Legal Battles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the above quote, Fuller brings up the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"on-going legal battle (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/thr-esq\/friday-13th-producer-points-writers-union-membership-bid-hold-franchise-rights-1012930\" target=\"_blank\">on-going legal battle<\/a> of over who came up with the original idea of that 1980 film that started it all. Screenwriter of the original film Victor Miller is in the middle of a lawsuit against the film&#8217;s producer Sean Cunningham and his production company over who originally conceived the original film&#8217;s idea. It&#8217;s reportedly caused the development of future films to halt, including an <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"abrupt cancellation (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2018\/06\/12\/friday-the-13th-dlc-canceled-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\">abrupt cancellation<\/a> of the game&#8217;s DLC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Victor Miller wins round one of the Friday the 13th lawsuit! Sean will certainly appeal but this could put pressure on Sean to settle. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Xhtp5ZRH00\">https:\/\/t.co\/Xhtp5ZRH00<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Larry Zerner (@Zernerlaw) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Zernerlaw\/status\/1045807936461844481?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 28, 2018<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miller reportedly had the courts <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"rule in his favor (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/thr-esq\/friday-13th-screenwriter-wins-rights-battle-producer-1147991\" target=\"_blank\">rule in his favor<\/a> against Cunningham but only for the original film&#8217;s rights in the United States. But there are still questions over the copyright of the Jason character that appears in later sequels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current Developments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notable figures in the industry have expressed their desires to make a new film in the franchise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Friday the 13th! Jason Vorhees is one of my favorites. Still don&#39;t understand how he caught people running and he just walked though.<\/p>&mdash; LeBron James (@KingJames) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KingJames\/status\/21073232222?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 13, 2010<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NBA superstar Lebron James through his production company <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"was in talks  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/bloody-disgusting.com\/movie\/3528412\/lebron-james-friday-the-13th-reboot\/\" target=\"_blank\">was in talks <\/a>to produce a new <em>Friday<\/em> film. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ain&#8217;t it Cool News reported on a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"script written by Clint Ford (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aintitcool.com\/node\/81246\" target=\"_blank\">script written by Clint Ford<\/a>, that takes the franchise to its beginnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another script floating around is one <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"by Tom McLoughlin (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.joblo.com\/horror-movies\/news\/tom-mcloughlin-offers-more-details-on-his-new-friday-the-13th-script\" target=\"_blank\">by Tom McLoughlin<\/a>, writer of <em>Friday the 13 Part VI: Jason Lives<\/em>. That story is a direct sequel to that film and will have nothing to do with the other films. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">for sure yes on friday the 13th.  ive tried a bunch of times to get the rights. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WSB06QB98J\">https:\/\/t.co\/WSB06QB98J<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Jason Blum (@jason_blum) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jason_blum\/status\/1030216096769400832?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 16, 2018<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jason Blum, one of the main producers of <em>Halloween<\/em> expressed his desire to tackle the <em>Friday<\/em> series. Ryan Turek, another producer of <em>Halloween<\/em>, also got excited <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"over the possibility (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/comicbook.com\/horror\/2019\/01\/15\/halloween-producer-reboot-friday-the-13th\/\" target=\"_blank\">over the possibility<\/a> of tackling this iconic series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> &#8220;Without question, at the top of my list would be\u00a0<em>Friday the 13th<\/em>. <em>Friday the 13th<\/em>\u00a0would be the franchise that I would love to work on next. Jason Blum shares that same passion. That is something that is unfortunately complicated. I mean, there&#8217;s all sorts of stuff going on not [just] with the video game, but legal stuff. But, if it came our way, I mean I would be on cloud nine. It would be absolutely incredible to do. I feel a little bit smoother, because, I think there are only a few promises you&#8217;d need to make when it comes to\u00a0<em>Friday the 13th<\/em>. That&#8217;s, you know, you gotta deliver on a summer camp. You gotta deliver on counselors. Recent horror films like <em>The Conjuring, It, Get Out, Us,<\/em> and <em>A Quiet Place<\/em> show that the genre can still attract a big audience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recent <em>Halloween<\/em> showed that people are still hungry for slashers starring their favorite icons. A new <em>Friday the 13th<\/em> could be the perfect film to compete with the new batch of <em>Halloween<\/em> films. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a shame the franchise is still going through legal issues that have been stopping the release of new films.
