In a shocking turn of events, Variety <\/a>is reporting that Marvel and Robert Downey Jr are in “final negotiations” to amend his contract and bring Ironman\/Tony Stark to Captain America 3, which is currently set for May 6th 2016.<\/p>\n

According to the report from Variety:<\/p>\n

“The actor is in final negotiations to play the billionaire in the yet-to-be-titled third installment, that is slated to begin production in the Spring for a May 6, 2016, release. Downey suits up as the superhero in next summer\u2019s \u201cThe Avengers: Age of Ultron\u201d as part of a previous deal that also calls for him to reprise the role in \u201cThe Avengers 3.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new pact is significant for the Marvel cinematic universe considering the plot will pit Stark against Captain America\u2019s alter-ego Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, as they feud over the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force for the authorities.<\/p>\n

Stark supports the program, but Rogers does not, saying it threatens civil liberties, causing sides to be taken and Rogers, among others, to go on the run to avoid arrest. The moral question and battle with his Avengers teammate essentially makes Stark a villain of sorts in \u201cCaptain America 3,\u201d providing Downey with a meaty role he could play out into future Marvel films, including a fourth \u201cAvengers.\u201d”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"214_robert_downey_jr_-906173-large_image\"<\/a>According to the report, the initial plan was to include the character in a limited cameo appearance, but Downey pushed for the role to be more integral, which eventually led to the contract negotiations to extend his roles.<\/p>\n

This also opens the door to the highly rumored IRON MAN 4. With the contracts on the table, Downey is no longer limited to only “two more films” but now the number is looking close to 4 or 5 more.<\/p>\n
