‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’: The DCEU’s final flop or last success?

It’s no secret to superhero fans that the DCEU has been, well, complicated. For some, it’s created a series of movies with stories of heroes that have defined those characters for an audience – maybe even a generation. For others, it’s felt like a nightmare of poor critic reviews, box office flops, and disjointed continuity. Nevertheless, Warner Brothers has continued to put them on the big screen to view, and the latest – and last – film in this saga is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Deadline has released box office predictions for the film’s Christmas weekend debut, and only around $40M is expected in the US. This could make it one more film in a series of 2023 DCEU box office flops – even earning less than Marvel Studio’s worst-performing film to date, The Marvels. But when thinking this through, we need to remember its overseas predictions, which look to be around $110M. And its predecessor, Aquaman, grossed over a billion dollars globally – making it the highest-grossing DC film ever. So, if there were ever a DCEU film to finish the series right and end on a high note, this would be it.
